Pulteney Weir

A weir has shaped the River Avon in Bath for over 400 years. Originally built across the river to power the water wheels of Monk’s Mill and Bathwick Mill (shown on the map below), it crossed the river diagonally. After a major flood in 1960 damaged Pulteney Bridge, it was rebuilt into the ‘V’ shape you see today. The weir now helps protect historic buildings and keeps water levels steady. From source to sea, the Avon has 41 weirs, locks and barriers.

On your next visit, listen to the river — does it roar or whisper? In flood, it thunders along and can be heard from a distance, and the weir may disappear. On calm days, listen for gentle splashes and bubbling.
