Avon Street & the Sack of Bath

The Avon Street district was built in the early 1700s for wealthy spa visitors. Floods and the busy industrial quayside forced them to relocate to more fashionable areas and by the late 1700s the area had become overcrowded and run-down. Many were upset when Avon Street was cleared in the 1970s, and the book The Sack of Bath argued that all Georgian buildings, not just the grand ones, should be preserved.
