Bath Gas Light and Coke Company

Town Gas

Once fields and farmland, in 1818 the area near Windsor Bridge became home to the Bath Gas Light and Coke Company. Somerset coal arrived by canal and river to be turned into ‘town gas’ — a mix of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. It was highly poisonous, and accidents were common. In 1971, Bath switched to North Sea gas, and the site was retired. Today, old industrial areas are being transformed, and historic pollution cleaned up.
