Peregrine Falcons - the world’s fastest animal - have been spotted on the spire of St John’s Church opposite since 2005. These rare birds made a comeback after nearly disappearing due to pesticide use. Because birds respond quickly to changes in climate and food sources, they’re great indicators of the health of our environment.
At St John’s Church, look for white streaks or droppings on the stone — clues they’ve been perching. You’re most likely to notice them between March and June during the breeding season, listen for their rasping ‘kak-kak-kak’. Visit the Hawk and Owl Trust website for more information.
