Quayside Industry

Known as Broad Quay — this area was once full of workshops and warehouses, boats and barges. The river moved raw materials and goods, powered factories and carried away industrial waste. Stothert & Pitt (1785 – 1989) employed over 2,000 people here, building cranes that were used worldwide. Bayer’s Corset Factory (1891 – 1982), employed mostly women, operating sewing machines at 4,000 stitches a minute!

Spot the red-bricked Corset Factory and the Stothert & Pitt crane on the opposite riverbank. Visit the Museum of Bath at Work on Julian Road to learn more about our local industries.
