Otters and Eels
Otters splash and swim along the River Avon, hunting frogs, crustaceans and fish with agility and skill. The rare European Eel travels across the Atlantic Ocean to the Avon. After reaching the age of 20 years, it migrates an impressive 5,000 - 6,000km back to the Sargasso Sea near Bermuda to spawn and die. Fish passes, eel ladders and otter bridges are used to help wildlife cross artificial barriers, such as weirs and dams.
Look for the fish pass on Pulteney Weir — a flat slope in the centre which helps them move up and down. Spotted an Otter or Eel? Record otters on the Mammal Mapper App . Record eels on iNaturalist.
