Bats

Bath is a top spot for bats — we have almost all the UK’s 18 species here. At dusk, Daubenton’s Bats (water bats) skim the water for insects and roost in nearby bridges, tunnels or tree holes. Bright lights can stop bats from leaving their roosts, disrupt feeding routes and make them easier for predators to spot. Dark skies help bats to thrive — and give us a clearer view of the stars.

Want to support your local bats? Keep your outside areas dark at night, plant flowers, trees and shrubs to encourage bat food (insects) and build a bat box.
