Ways to Help the River

Everyone can help protect the River Avon. Here are some ideas to try; they can make a real difference:

At Home

Learn about the Avon: explore where the river begins and ends, where your drinking water comes from, and where wastewater goes

Listen to Storying the Avon by Corrine Harragin to hear from geologists, campaigners and river communities.

Save water: use a water butt, take shorter showers, fix dripping taps and leaky loos

Watch what you pour: keep fats, coffee, milk, oils and chemicals out of sinks and only flush the 3 P’s – pee, poo and (toilet) paper

Create a rain garden: plant a small rain garden that lets water soak naturally into the ground and helps reduce it overwhelming drains

Out and About

Record wildlife: spot and share plants, animals and fungi using iNaturalist or Mammal Mapper

Pick up litter: even one piece helps – and report overflowing bins

Keep dogs out of the water: to help reduce bank erosion and prevent flea and worming treatments entering the river. Chemicals found in some treatments can kill aquatic insects, including mayflies, damselflies and freshwater shrimps, which play an important role in a healthy river ecosystem.

Report pollution: report to the Environment Agency online or on the phone – 0800 80 70 60
